‘Chopped Champions’ Marc Murphy serves as official spokesperson for Share Our Strength’s Dine Out For No Kid Hungry Fundraising Program held September 18-24

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Aug. 9, 2011) – He may be known for creating delectable culinary dishes in his multiple New York City kitchens, but now Marc Murphy, Executive Chef and Owner of the Benchmarc Restaurants and judge on Food Network’s “Chopped Champions,” is hoping to put childhood hunger in America on the chopping block. Together with Food Network and hunger-relief organization Share Our Strength®, Murphy will encourage everyone to dine out at one of thousands of restaurants across the country participating in Share Our Strength’s Dine Out For No Kid Hungry, a national fundraising program held the week of September 18-24.

Food Network has worked with Share Our Strength over the past several years to raise awareness of childhood hunger in America, while offering its audience actionable ways to help. For Share Our Strength’s Dine Out For No Kid Hungry fundraising program, Murphy and several other Food Network personalities from “Chopped Champions” are lending considerable culinary clout to national print and broadcast public service announcements (PSA’s) that encourage viewers to eat at participating restaurants the week of September 18-24. In addition, Food Network will promote the fundraising program on-air during season three of “Chopped Champions,” airing August 30th through September 27th.

Murphy’s own NYC restaurants – Landmarc at the Time Warner Center, Ditch Plains Upper West Side, Ditch Plains West Village and Landmarc Tribeca – will also be raising funds for Dine Out For No Kid Hungry.

“Ending childhood hunger in America by 2015 is something everyone can contribute to,” says Murphy. “As a culinary professional and, more importantly, as a father, ensuring that our children can take advantage of community programs and healthy eating education is crucial. If you typically eat out, you can help end childhood hunger by simply dining out at any of the more than 4,000 restaurants participating in this amazing campaign.”

Funds raised through Dine Out For No Kid Hungry support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® Campaign, to end childhood hunger in America. Specific efforts include ensuring that children in need are enrolled in federal nutrition programs like school lunch and breakfast; investing in community organizations that help connect kids with the food they need; teaching at-risk families how to cook healthy, affordable meals; and building public-private partnerships to end child hunger at the state and city levels. Last year, restaurants raised more than $1.5 million through Dine Out For No Kid Hungry – a number they hope to double this year.

“U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics show that nearly one in four children in this country are at risk of hunger. They just can’t count on getting the food they need,” said Debbie Shore, co-founder of Share Our Strength. “We’re incredibly proud to have Food Network partner with us in our fight to end childhood hunger. The influence, compassion and enthusiasm of Chef Marc Murphy will be invaluable in communicating how simple it is for anyone, anywhere to join our fight against hunger.”

Now in its fourth year, Dine Out For No Kid Hungry leverages America’s love affair with chefs and restaurants, the desire to give back to those in need and the yearning to patronize businesses that are doing the same. More than 4,000 participating restaurants, including independently run locations such as Murphy’s Benchmarc Restaurants and chain brands such as Boston Market, P.F. Chang’s, O’Charley’s, raise funds in a variety of ways, from donating a percentage of sales, to hosting customer promotions and merchandizing opportunities. Share Our Strength’s Dine Out For No Kid Hungry is nationally sponsored by Sysco, American Express, Ecolab, Open Table, Food Network, USA Today, and the National Restaurant Association. For more information, or to find participating restaurants, visit www.DineOutForNoKidHungry.org.

Chinese sculpter Lei Yixin works on the granite head that will cap the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial on the Mall.

Washington, D.C. (April 28, 2011) – The Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. today announced plans for the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C. The official dedication will occur on Sunday, August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King’s historic I Have A Dream speech, beginning with a pre-dedication concert at 10 a.m. The dedication ceremony will commence at 11 a.m. and a post-dedication concert will follow beginning at 2 p.m.

Reserved tickets to the historic event will be distributed through an online lottery system. The public may request up to two tickets by visiting www.dedicatethedream.org and submitting their information into the ticket lottery. Visitors must register by 11:59 p.m. EDT on May 31 to be included in the lottery for the random selection process. Ticket recipients for the seated and reserved standing areas will be notified by email on June 15, 2011. Public standing areas that do not require tickets will also be available.

“We are thrilled that we will be dedicating the Memorial to Dr. King in the coming months, and the Foundation looks forward, with great pride, to presenting this Memorial – this dream – that we’ve worked to build, to the people. Dr. King, his life, his dream, and his legacy, will be a source of history and inspiration for all people, for all time,” said Harry E. Johnson, Sr., president and CEO of the MLK Memorial Foundation. “I’m very much looking forward to celebrating this momentous event with my fellow Americans and people around the world who understand what this memorial stands for, and the relevance of Dr. King’s message.”

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is the first on the National Mall to honor a man of hope, a man of peace, and a man of color. Located on the Tidal Basin, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial creates a visual line of leadership between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The memorial will be an engaging landscape experience conveying four fundamental and recurring themes throughout Dr. King’s life – democracy, justice, hope, and love – and features the use of natural elements including water, stone, and trees. A 450-foot inscription wall will feature more than a dozen Dr. King quotes engraved into granite to serve as a lasting testament and reminder of Dr. King’s humanitarian vision. The memorial will include the “Mountain of Despair” and the “Stone of Hope,” which will feature a 30-foot sculpture of Dr. King.

To learn more about dedication plans, including events that will take place earlier in Dedication Week, please visit www.dedicatethedream.org. Beacon Bar & Grill Re-Opens THE SKY-BAR a rooftop lounge

The Beacon Bar & Grill announces the re-opening of the newly designed SKY-BAR atop the Beacon Hotel & Corporate Quarters.   Sporting a fresh hew look and menu, designer Walter Gagliano in his second design mission for the year with the Beacon Bar & Grill was called to re-envision the rooftop space.

Now in its fifth continuous year, the very popular seasonal rooftop lounge features a bold, festive semi retro look.  Sporting zebra and black and white trellis patterns, and gleaming steel with some throw back in time feel yet the look is contemporary, fresh and casual.  Gagliano drew inspiration from what that had originally inspired the design of the main dining room of the Beacon Bar & Grill unveiled in January 2011, where he employed some classic elements as portrayed in Vermeer’s over-scale portrait of  “Girl with a Pearl Earring” to create a design for the Sky-Bar that would be congruent to each other yet totally  different.

The use of bold patterns provides visual impact, yet allows for a cozy and welcoming vibe.  “Our goal was to bring the space to a cleaner more contemporary feel reminiscent of a personal retreat” States Gagliano, “Punches of color were added with bright “no apologies” kitschy green Astroturf carpeting simply to enhance the outdoors feel. “Gagliano’s fondness for bold romanticism finds yet another place to manifest itself in his fabric choices and comfortable furnishings, but never to be confused with grandma’s porch”, states Kamran Vakili, general manager of the Beacon Bar & Grill.

Chef Steven Hunter has introduced a new bar menu that is simple and tasty, to readily complement the outdoor experience with some classic comfort foods.  The drink menu feature new creations such as “Hurricane Beacon”, ‘Sex in the Sky” Watermelon Margaritas (last season’s most popular drink) and some Sofia- mini Blanc de Blancs – a fun sparkling wine in a can and Nicholas Fueillatte brut sparkling splits, good looking enough to drink right from the bottle and a host of premium beverages.
